...Now because of a bug, but because of a super-user who would sit there and love every. single. item. by one producer. I've just built in a restriction so that everybody can only have a certain number of loves per day (don't worry, it's still plenty).

I don't have evidence that it was nefarious, but some people really do just sit there and love hundreds of items from a producer every day. I just never had a flood filter for that one. Working on it now.
I always think it's a swizz when someone repeatedly attains WOTD simply by posting hundreds of other people's pictures in their gallery without permission.
Having said that, the real problem is perhaps that WOTD is such a content based award in the first place. I wonder if users could be encouraged to win approval in other ways - so those who don't produce content can be rewarded more for their meritorious participation on the forum.

Well the new love restriction should help with the problem. But really, if they're posting pictures against copyright and I know it, I'll remove their gallery. Usually when I follow up on those pics with the respective producers, the producers state they don't mind it, so long as their copyright is intact. As such, I do take action if I come across galleries that I think were stolen, or where the user can't verify they own or are allowed to use the content.
I have a bunch of knobs that I turn occasionally which adjust the weighting of the WOTD algorithms. I had them skewed more heavily toward the personal user galleries because producers were doing big pic dumps in the forums which were making it all but impossible for the "little person" to ever get Wammer of the Day. I've recently had to turn the weight back the other way a bit because for a while, like no producers were getting WOTD even when putting up lots of good, original content.
Then recently I found that a user was loving hundreds of items every day for one producer, causing them to be stuck at WOTD for days. So I've recently built in new restrictions so that only the first [undisclosed number] of loves, from any given user for any given producer, will count. I also had a personal conversation with the person who was spamming the loves.
This is a content-based site, so I do want WOTD to merit content primarily. But basically any type of media on this site can be loved, such as forum posts, stories and blogs, comments, site listings, reviews, and on and on. I'll continue to tweak the knobs to try and highlight the best content and users. The floor is always open for input on that.
